WEEK ONE: How to Write A Blog?

Hello, everyone. Welcome to Mengmeng's blog :)

Are you interested in blogging? If the answer is yes, you may be curious about how to build an attractive blog. Just keep reading this blog! I'm sure you will get some insights from it.

This week I will take Scott Thornbury's blog A-Z of ELT as an example. The review is organized from the following aspects: organisation and layout, content and features, ease of use and navigation, and target audience.

  • Organisation and Layout

The home page of this blog is quite clear, which is constructed in alphabetical order with key EFL terminologies and it is friendly to readers. It means that readers can easily select the information they need. In addition, it's very inspiring that the author used gadgets to show popular topics by utilizing different size fonts. But the style of the blog is a little old-fashioned, especially for youngsters, who are attracted by eye-catching pictures and bright colours.

It should be noticed that there is no standard template for blog organisation. It's important to develop your own style to launch ideas with a clear layout. Therefore, the readers will find it effective and pleasant to browse your blogs.

  • Content and Features

This academic blog mainly focuses on terminology and concepts with regard to EFL combined with writer's personal opinions and some useful examples.  Providing enough professional evidence of arguments will enhance the reliability of this blog. Therefore, it's necessary to present references at the end of the blog. What's more, it also includes subscription, comment and keywords buttons, which can increase exposure to more potential readers.

  • Ease of Use and Navigation

The navigation menu at the top of the page is easy to understand. And as I have mentioned before, the name of catalogue is concise. Furthermore, the blog also covers information about himself and the purpose of starting this blog, which is a good way to communicate with audience.

After clicking on the articles in the blog, you can easily see buttons navigating you to related articles, which is also an inspiration for us to combine the articles in the blog together. However, there is less boldface in such long texts so readers may be distracted easily.

  • Target Audience

According to the comments from the blog, the target audience is mainly English language teachers and scholars in ELT and EFL areas. It can be seen that there was some lively interaction between the readers and the blogger. They found it introduced academic theories and provoking ideas for their pedagogical practice.

Therefore, in terms of building your blog, it's necessary to consider the needs and features of the target audience.

Summary

In conclusion, this blog is well-organized and it's useful for beginners to learn from it.

  1. Hi mengmeng,

I really like the font color and background color of your bullet points, it gives the blog a very clear structure. On top of that, you've bolded the emphasis which is very reader friendly. I was thinking maybe adding a few pictures would make the blog more interesting? I hope this suggestion is helpful to you.
